TDS3014B connecting with and RS232 to USB adapter

Postby sscribbins on Mon Jun 27, 2011 12:12 pm

Hi all

I have a TDS 3024B which I am connecting to a computer which has only a single RS232 port on it. I now have another device which requires the serial port on the PC, so I need to connect the scope via a serial to USB adapter. I know this is possible, as I have seen it done before with the exact same device but I seem to be having some trouble configuring the software to communicate with the scope.

When connecting to the scope via serial there is no problem, but as soon as I switch to the usb adapter, the Instrument Manager Service software can see the scope but a connection test results in the error message:
"Device Proxy (tek TDS3014) is running but the attached hardware is not responding. Response string is: ()." (SW Status: Running, HW Status: Not Responding on the instrument manager main screen).

I notice that the scope is a 3024 and the software sees a 3014, but this works fine in serial (I don't know how much difference there is between the 3014 and 3024, if any, so I have no idea if this is important - thought I'd mention it just in case it's relevant).

Can anyone help with this?

Thanks

S

The tds3012B and TDS3022B is only different in bandwidth. The connection however should be the same. USB-RS232 adapters are going to assign the new resource to a different COM port that the physical port on your computer. Make sure you have the correct one selected. Also, is the adapter Null Modem?

Which instrument manager are you referring to? Did you put both NI VISA and Tek VISA on your machine?

I ma referring to Tektronix Instrument Manager Software, version 2.6, built Feb 20, 2002

I think I installed both NI VISA and Tek VISA. But how can I double check it?

P.S. How can I attach the screenshots to this post?

This sounds like the instrument manager for Wavestar. This can work with NI VISA (it is the configuration I use). I would recommend making sure you have the latest version of NI VISA (5.1.1) and the latest version of Wavestar (3.0). Do no install (or uninstall any existing) anything reference to Tek VISA or Open Choice, to ensure that you do not have two visas installed. Wavestar comes packaged with a version of TekVISA, so if you do not opt to no install it, it will put Tek VISA on your machine.

Note - You cannot currently attach pictures in the forums, but you can give links to other sites where the picture is hosted.

Uninstalling the TekVISA is the path I would recommend. From you will want to use the add/remove programs from the Control Panel in Windows (called Programs and Features in Win 7) and uninstall OpenChoice TekVISA and TekVISA USB-TMC. I would then go to NI's website and download an reinstall the latest version of NI-VISA (I belive 5.1.1 is the most recent version as of today). This should correct the conflict.
